General Policies
What is your refund policy?
If a student must withdraw from the course prior to the FIRST day of class, there will be two (2) options given: A refund of tuition less the $200 non-refundable deposit or transferring the student to another class session within the same year (12 months), without fee. No refunds will be issued after the first day of class.
What methods of payment are accepted?
We accept cash, check, or card. In person payments of cash, check, or card can be made during business hours. Payments can also be made online via card. We accept Visa or Mastercard, please note there is a 3% processing fee.
What tuition packages do you offer?
Our premium course package is six hundred ninety-one dollars ($691) which includes thirty hours (30) of classroom training, six (6) 1-hour instructor drives, six (6) 1-hour observation drives, two (2) attempts of the Knowledge Test (written test) and one (1) attempt at the Skills Test (drive test).
Our basic course package is five hundred ninety-one dollars ($591) which includes thirty hours (30) of classroom training, six (6) 1-hour instructor drives, and six (6) 1-hour observation drives.
There is a two hundred dollar ($200) non-refundable deposit to guarantee position in class, this deposit is subtracted from the tuition costs.
Do you offer private drive instruction?
Yes, you may purchase drives three ways: One (1) 1-hour drive for $98, a package of four (4) 1-hour drives for $380, or a package of eight (8) 1-hour drives for $720.
Do you offer a payment plan?
Yes, we offer two options for those who elect to not pay the full tuition at the beginning of class. Option one carries an additional fee of $50 requiring the tuition be paid in full (and any acquired fees) by the end of the third week of class. Option two is for those who elect to carry the tuition cost over the course or who do not/cannot pay by the end of the third week of class. This second option carries an additional fee of $100 and all monies (tuition and any acquired fees) are due at the beginning of the final in-class session.
Do you provide a military discount?
We proudly offer an active military and Veteran discount of twenty-five dollars ($25) off our tuition packages (both premium and basic). Freedom Driving School is a Veteran owned company and we proudly honor and support the Armed Forces.

What discounts do you offer?
We provide a $25 discount for active military, Veterans, school district employees, and if you enroll more than one student at a time. These discounts are applied to the basic tuition package and premium tuition. The discount applies to only one student if you are enrolling more than one student.

What is your missed drive fee?

Do I need to pay my missed drive fee before I can drive?
All fees need to be paid by the beginning of the final class session. If fees are not paid a student will not be allowed to take their final in-class assessment required for completing driver's education. No more than two additional fees can be accrued.
Can I appeal my missed drive fee/other fees, or have it waived?
Yes, you will be charged the fee in all cases, but management can discuss the circumstances of the missed drive fee and may issue a refund. The discussion with management does not guarantee a refund or waiver of fees.
What if I lose or damage my textbook?
Should you damage or lose your book checked out to you for class, you may be charged at $55 book replacement fee.
What if I lose my workbook?
Should you damage (not usuabe) or lose your workbook needed to accompany your textbook you for class, you may purchase a replacement at $10.
How old do I need to be to start driver's education classes?
At least 15 years of age, in the state of Washington.
How long does it take to complete driver's education classes?
It generally takes eight (8) to twelve (12) weeks to complete the thirty (30) classroom hours, six (6) instructional drives, six (6) observational drives, knowledge test and skills test.
What does the state of Washington require for driver training?
Washington State Department of Licensing (DOL) requires thirty (30) hours of classroom instruction by a certified instructor. The state also requires students to attend and pass all classroom sessions. Washington State DOL requires students to complete and pass six (6) instructor drives and one (1) observation. An observation is when the student observes another student driver. All perspective drivers must take and pass the Washington State DOL Knowledge Test (written test) and Skills Test (drive test).
Our course requirements exceed Washington State Department of Licensing requirements to better serve in educating students.
Are your instructors licensed?
Our instructors go through a rigorous certification and licensing program. They have 100 hours of training with a testing component requiring a 90% passage rate on their written test and behind the wheel drive test.
What are acceptable forms of identification?
Washington State ID, Washington State Instructional Permit, Washington State Non-Photo Permit with Photo ID (School ID, Military ID, Passport, etc.), Out of State ID with Washington State ID Number (WDL), Passport with Washington State ID Number (WDL), Military ID with Washington State ID Number (WDL).
Can I take my Knowledge Test (written test) or Skills Test (drive test) at Freedom Driving School even if I am not an enrolled student?
Yes, we offer both tests. The fee for the Knowledge Test (written test) is $50 for two-attempts. The fee for the Skills Test (drive test) is $75 for one-attempt. All Skills Tests are completed in Freedom Driving School vehicles.
If I pay for my Skills Test (drive test) outside of a tuition package, can I drive in my own car?
Yes, however, most drives are completed in Freedom Driving School vehicles.
Do you offer virtual driver's education?
Washington State Department of Licensing does not approve of any virtual instruction. Currently, we are not offering an online component for our driver's education courses.
Classroom Sessions
When can I start driver's education classes?
You may sign up for driver's education classes when you are fifteen (15) years old.
Do I need a Washington State Department of Licensing permit to start classes?
No, to obtain a permit you need to take and pass the Knowledge Test (written test), fees for this test are included in most tuition packages from Freedom Driving School. Instruction to aid in taking the Knowledge Test are covered in class.
What is a WDL?
WDL stands for Washington Driver's License number. You will be issued a number unique to you by the Washington State Department of Licensing. You will need this number to enroll in and attend driver's education courses at Freedom Driving School.
How do I get my Washington State Driver's License Number (WDL)?
You obtain your WDL by pre-applying directly through the Department of Licensing (DOL). You will create an account through the DOL and at the conclusion of its creation be issued a WDL.
What is the difference between a Washington State DOL permit and an Instruction permit?
A DOL permit is issued after a driver takes and passes the Knowledge Test (written test). The Instruction permit is also issued by the Department of Licensing through a waiver filled out by Freedom Driving School once a WDL is provided.
How do I get a waiver for an Instruction permit to begin class?
You will enroll with Freedom Driving School online or in-person. During the enrollment process we will use your Washington State Driver's License Number (WDL) to issue you a waiver for your Instruction permit. You will need either your DOL permit or Instruction permit with appropriate photo ID to begin classes.
What happens if I miss a class?
If you miss a class session there are two options: students can attend the make-up class on Thursdays, the missed class fee is $65 or a student may also request and attend a private missed class session for $95. Any student who misses more than three (3) classes will automatically be dropped from the course and marked as incomplete with the Department of Licensing.
Does classroom have to be completed to start drives/behind-the-wheel?
Scheduling for behind-the-wheel begins after the first week of class or three in-class sessions.
What materials should I bring to class?
Students need to bring a writing utensil and a notebook. Keep in mind that many drives are scheduled before or after in-class sessions, be sure to bring your approved photo ID, permit, and logbook.
Do you have a dress code for classroom sessions?
Appropriate clothing is required for both in-class and drive sessions. Students need to wear shirts with a sleeve (no tank tops or sleeveless shirts). Hemlines on all student shorts and skirts must be at the knee or lower when standing so that when sitting it does not hike up too high when sitting at tables. Students are not permitted to wear crop-tops, sheer-tops, beachwear, or bedroom attire. Fashionable holes, rips, and tears on pants should not go above the knee nor be located on the chest.
Do you have a footwear requirement for classroom sessions?
Students should be prepared at all times to go on drives to meet their scheduling requirements. It is best that students wear the approved drive shoes to class as well. All students must have appropriate footwear for drives, this footwear encloses the entire foot without a fashionable heel/sole (tennis shoes are a great choice). Inappropriate footwear consists of but is not limited to sandals, slides, Crocs, flip-flips, high-heels, wedges, or slippers. Your instructor will check your foot attire prior to the drive.
Drives/Behind-the-Wheel
How many drives are there?
You will complete a minimum of six (6) 1-hour instructor drives. Drives are two (2) hours in length: one (1) hour for your drive and one (1) of observation.
How long do I have to complete my drives?
All drives should be completed within eight (8) to twelve (12) weeks of the class start date.
When can I start the my drives/behind-the-wheel lessons?
After the first week of class or three in-class sessions the first drive is scheduled.
How long do I drive with an instructor?
Your drive with the instructor lasts one (1) hour. You will be in the car a total of two (2) hours, one (1) hour for your drive and one (1) hour observing another student and instructor during their drive.
How do I schedule a behind-the-wheel lesson?
Driving lessons are most often scheduled directly with the instructor at the conclusion of class or a drive. Drives may also be scheduled through the student portal, your instructor, and calling the office during regular business hours.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule my driving lesson?
Call the office during regular business hours or contact your instructor three (3) working days prior to your scheduled drive. Most drives are scheduled with the instructor at the end of in-class sessions or the conclusion of a drive. If rescheduling and cancellations occur less than three (3) days before, you will be charged a fee of $98.
What if I do not practice between my instructor drives?
Failure to practice and/or have the hours properly logged will result in a fee of $98. The scheduled drive will still occur but without new skills being practiced. The drive will be conducted as a private drive with student continuing practice of skills covered the previous drive.
How many practice drive hours do I need to have between scheduled instructor drives?
You will need to have three (3) hours of practice with a licensed adult who has held a valid driver's license for five (5) years or longer. You will be given skills to practice at the conclusion of your instructor drive. These hours must be logged in your provided logbook with required signature.
What if I fail a drive?
Most drives are evaluated on a Pass/Fail system. Should a student fail a drive they will be given skills and activities to practice. The student will need to purchase an additional drive for a $98 fee.
What materials do I need to bring for drives?
You will need your approved photo ID, Washington State Department of Licensing permit/Instruction permit, and your provided logbook. All of these items must be physically present pictures of these items will not be accepted for student drives.
What if I am late for a drive?
If a student is more than ten (10) minutes late for their scheduled drive a missed drive fee of $98 will be assessed.
Do you charge a cancellation fee for drives/Behind-the-Wheel?
If you cancel your drive three (3) working days or more prior to your scheduled drive no fee is charged. If you cancel your drive after the three (3) working days, you will be charged a fee of $98.
Do I need a Washington State Department of Licensing permit to schedule my drives?
No, but you need to have your waiver which gets you an Instruction permit. You will need to have your Washington State Department of Licensing waiver with Instruction Permit or DOL permit for all drives. Your Instruction permit will be checked against your ID before you begin each drive with your instructor.
Will I have other students in the car with me?
Yes, you may have one additional student in the car with you. This student is satisfying their drive and observation requirements.
Can I request to have lessons with a friend or sibling?
No, we do not allow friends or siblings to ride together.
Can I request a specific driving instructor?
Most of the time you will have your drives scheduled with the instructor you have for in-class sessions. At times you may drive with another instructor. You can always ask to schedule with an instructor, and we may be able to accommodate your request depending upon availability.
Will I have the same instructor for every lesson?
We have a large pool of instructors, and you may drive with any one of them out of your chosen location. We do strive to schedule students with the same instructor as availability allows.
What types of shoes can I wear for my drives?

Do you offer home pick-up and drop-off?
No. We do not offer any form of transportation services whether from home, school, or another location.
Can I use my own car?
No, all instructor drives are completed in Freedom Driving School vehicles. However, there are accommodations for driving in personal vehicles if purchasing the skills test (drive test) are purchased separately.
Do I need to have my own car insurance for instructor drives?
No
What happens if I do not complete my drives?
If a student does not complete or attempt required drives, the student will be dropped from the course and marked incomplete with the Department of Licensing.
